5 Players To Look Out For in The Doubles – Chelsea & Villa

With Chelsea taking part in the European Super Cup, we’re treated to a double gameweek during the first week of Premier League action. The sides to benefit are Chelsea and Aston Villa, with two very different outcomes. Chelsea have an excellent double with two home matches, playing host to Hull on Sunday before taking on Villa on Wednesday night. Whilst Villa have two difficult away trips starting with the Emirates on Saturday before travelling to Stamford Bridge later in the week.

With this in mind, we’ve chosen 5 players that you should consider going into the first gameweek of the season…

1. Ashley Cole (£6.5m)

With Chelsea facing a trip to Old Trafford on the following Monday, the risk of rotation is a serious danger given the squad at Mourinho’s disposal. Excluding Cech, the most secure defensive player is Cole, given that his only competition is Bertrand. He was also given the night off in England’s recent international friendly with Baines playing the full 90 minutes. Despite his age, Cole is more than capable of playing 3 games in the space of 8 days, especially when two will be relatively comfortable home games.

2. Juan Mata (£10.5m)

Mata was Chelsea’s player of the season in 2012/13 and despite transfer gossip over the summer, there was no chance that Mourinho was going to let him leave. Whilst discussing tactical positions, Mourinho stated that he thought Mata was practically the only player he would like playing on the right, as he likes a left-footed attacker who can cut inside. Taking this all into account, it seems that Mata is likely to start both games with the only risk being whether he’ll finish both. If Chelsea are cruising in either game, Mata could come off for a rest but the fantasy points are likely to already be in the bag if this is the case.

3. Eden Hazard (£9.5m)

Next up we have the Belgian star, Hazard, who had a very impressive debut season for Chelsea. During pre-season, Mourinho has singled him out as someone he wants to help fulfil his true potential and this bodes well for fantasy managers. Coming in at £1m cheaper than Mata, he offers value but at the cost of slightly less security. There are a number of players who Mourinho feels can fill his position and the the risk of an early substitution applies to Hazard just as much as Mata.

4. Christian Benteke (£9.0m)

Villa face two tricky away matches so we’ve decided to overlook their defensive talents and go straight to their star man, Benteke. It was surprising at how things changed with Benteke looking set to leave one minute and signing a new contract the next but he’ll be a massive boost this season for them. On his day, he’s more than a handful for any defence and Benteke is sure to give the Arsenal and Chelsea backlines a thorough examination in the first gameweek of the season.

5. Andreas Weimann (£6.0m)

Weimann earned a regular starting role over the course of last season through his tenacity and hard work. With 7 goals, 4 assists and 12 bonus points, Weimann had a decent season. If you’re looking for a budget striker for the first gameweek, you might want to take a gamble on Weimann and with a current ownership of 2.5%, he’s also an interesting differential option.

To finish, there’s a word of caution when picking any double gameweek players. Keep in mind that Gameweek 3 is a blank for both sides so avoid overloading and leaving yourself in a tricky situation later down the line. In addition, Chelsea face trips to United and Everton, whilst Villa host Liverpool.
