Following on from our Jack Wilshere article, we’ve got another budget midfielder for you from a top Premier League side. In January, Wilfried Zaha was signed by United for an initial £10m fee that could rise £15m depending on appearances. Zaha was immediately loaned back to Palace for the rest of the season helping the club to promotion, and he will now face his former club at some point in the 2013-14 season.
At 20 years of age, his footballing career is set to take off and with United’s wingers struggling for form last season, Zaha could get a shot from the outset to impress. His chances are set to increase if Nani completes his move to Monaco (this may have happened by the time you read this article). At just 6.5m, he will be of incredible value if he cements a spot in the United starting eleven and if you watch the video below, he loves to take on players.
Full of trickery and pace, he could be exactly what United need following last season. If Zaha does get his shot, he’s set for a baptism of fire as United face Chelsea, Liverpool and City in their first 5 games. Sandwiched in between will be an emotional match against his former club, Crystal Palace, although it will help that the Old Trafford faithful will be behind him all the way.
To help analyse his potential, we’ve done some digging and found some stats for you to peruse. In the 2011-2012 season, he won The Football League’s Young Player of The Year, playing 48 games, scoring 9 times and picking up 5 assists. In the 2012-13 season, Zaha was influential in helping Palace to promotion. In the second leg of the play off semi-final, he scored twice against Brighton to put them through to the final where he won the penalty that secured promotion to the Premier League.
Whether Zaha gets a starting spot remains to be seen but he’s impressing in pre-season and is sure to be one to watch this season. At 6.5m, he might be worth the gamble but you should ensure that you have another squad player to step in, just in case Moyes goes for experience over youth.
